Mr. Shyhiem Marquis McCaskill

The passing of Mr. Shyhiem Marquis McCaskill, age 22, on Saturday, June 25, 2022, is being announced by his family. Shyhiem affectionally known as Shy and Glizzy was born February 13, 2000, he was the first-born son of DeShaun McCaskill and Dana Fox. As a young child, Shyhiem saw a lot and learned a lot, he had vision and dreams for life and all he hoped to accomplish. Growing up Shyhiem was always polite and would thank you for anything and everything you did for him Shyhiem was appreciative and made sure you knew it. Shyhiem had a special love and heart for his mom, Dana. Shyhiem, as he got older wouldn’t let much time go by before he felt he needed to call and check in and if he couldn’t get her by phone first chance he would get there to make sure all was ok. Shyhiem’s dad nurtured those dreams and provided many nuggets of wisdom all throughout Shyhiem’s life. He encouraged Shyhiem to try something different so that he could have a chance to manifest some of his dreams. As a result, Shyhiem graduated from Kitrell Job Corps where he received a Culinary Arts Certificate in 2017. Shyhiem and his sisters Zorina and Dasha were one. If something was going on between the three of them they each knew everything and everybody else…well if they felt you didn’t need to know, then you didn’t know. Shyhiem loved his sisters but he was a true big brother, they laughed together, played together and shared together. You would often find Shyhiem at Ms. Amanda’s house along with the entire Holmes family, eating up all of her food with his culinary creations. Shyhiem learned quickly how to make a meal out of anything and he would smile as though it was the best ever made. Ms. Amanda and her boys were family. Shyhiem visited their hometown Wilmington and enjoyed going to the beach. Shyhiem loved being with family and would go to his grandmothers during summer vacations, Thanksgiving and Christmas. During those visits, Shyhiem visited NASA, the Smithsonian Museums, New York, Miami, the beaches and season passes at Six Flags. Shyhiem loved riding the Metro through DC and getting to know the area when he got off work. We all wondered how Shyhiem was able to work at Gallaudet, the School for the Deaf, not knowing sign language. To Shyhiem it wasn’t difficult at all, his response when asked was “I just did what I knew I was supposed to do” and they requested for him to come back. Shyhiem was dedicated and hardworking on his jobs and it always showed. His face would always light up as he described the adventures of the day and you could see the beam of pride in his eyes for doing a great job. Shyhiem had a heart of a giver. Whenever he saw anyone homeless in the street he would always tell his grandmother to slow down so he could give them some change, he always wanted to help however he could. As much as Shyhiem loved exploring the DC life, he returned to Durham to check on his cousin and for the birth of his daughter Ja’Novia, born December 24, 2019. Ja’Novia was Shyhiem’s heart and he did everything he could to spoil her. Before Ja’Novia was born Shyhiem was making sure her tennis shoe game was on point. Shyhiem loved spending time with his daughter and talked about Novia “All of the Time”, She is Daddy’s Girl! He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter Ja’Novia McCaskill, his parents DeShaun McCaskill and Dana Fox, his sisters Zorina and Dasha Fox and brothers Stassi and Sage Fox. Grandmothers Renee McCaskill and Zorina Hartman, Uncles David McCaskill, Marcus Fox and Eddie Fox, Aunts Shakisha Fox, Tonya Fox, Katana Fox, Victoria Fox and Kawana Fox. His cousins Irease Jeffrey, Diamond Manning, Israel Glover, Willie Witherspoon, William Witherspoon, Destiny Fox, Eddie Fox, Maheaven Mamon, Jessica Glover, Joseph Mamon, Nehemiah Fox, Miciah Fox, Edwin Mamom, Edrian Mamon, Ezaiah Mamon, Judah Fox, Kwame Fox, Edzel Mamon, Emari Mamon, Jacade Zambrana, Hymeem Fox, Courtney Fox, Michael McCaskill, Keesha Frye, Terri Frye, Breanna Herndon, Markus Frye, Jasmine Frye, Jeremy Frye, Nina Frye and Justin Frye. A celebration of life service will be held at Scarborough & Hargett Celebration of Life Center, Inc., 309 N Queen Street, Durham, North Carolina 27701, on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at 12:00 noon, with viewing from 11:00 a.m. until 11:55 a.m. *Attendance at the service is limited to fifty individuals and in every effort to protect our families and their guests, face coverings are required upon entering our facility.
