April 5, 1938 - June 27, 2020
The passing of Mr. Charles Edward McCray, age 82, on Sunday, June 28, 2020, at Pettigrew Rehabilitation Center, is being announced by his family. Charles Edward McCray was born in Fuquay, North Carolina on April 5, 1938. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emily Thompson Vinson and Otis Vinson. Charles received his education at the School for the Deaf in Raleigh, North Carolina where he learned sign language. He was not gainfully employed but he enjoyed working with his father Otis, who performed odd jobs for people as a free lance contractor. Charles was an only child. He and his aunt Chris being close in age, grew up as siblings. His parents entrusted Chris to "look after" Charles should anything happen to them. At the passing of his parents in 1999, aunt Chris assumed the responsibility and ensured that Charles' needs were met. She loved Charles as a brother. Chris later married Robert Cannady, and Robert was very helpful in looking out for Charles in many ways. They were like the "3 Musketeers". Charles would also assist Chris with grocery shopping and helping her down the steps and in and out of the car as needed. Robert, Chris and Charles shared a duplex and they lived as a close knit and loving family. For that we give God the Glory! Charles loved God and he joined and faithfully attended The Good Tidings Chapel located at 875 Estes Street in Durham, just a few doors up the street from where he lived. The pastor at that time was Pastor Patricia Reams. Pastor Reams took a great interest in Charles and manifested her love by praying for him, transporting and accompanying him to medical appointments and doing other deeds as needed. She was a blessing. The Good Tidings Chapel church family under the leadership of Pastor Lucy Bailey, continued to embrace Charles with love and warm fellowship. Pat, a neighbor and special friend of the family, would walk or ride her bike to Charles' home and administer his eye drops and his medications. Charles, Chris and Robert very much appreciated Pat's kindness. Charles was admitted to Pettigrew Rehabilitation Center after his health declined and he incurred several falls. Chris and Robert visited regularly. When Chris could not visit, Robert would go and cut Charles' hair. Pettigrew Rehab provided good care for Charles. We thank God for Charles, for keeping him, for loving his, and for giving him to us for 82 long years. We miss him, and we know that he is at home with His heavenly Father. So we rejoice in that and we will not complain. In addition to family and friends in Durham, North Carolina, Charles has a host of family in Baltimore, Maryland. TO GOD BE THE GLORY! . A Service of Celebration has been scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. at Scarborough & Hargett Celebration of Life Center, Inc., 309 N Queen Street, Durham, North Carolina 27701.
