Mrs. Deborah Jeanette Curry

It is with deep sadness the family of Deborah Jeanette Mahon Curry announces her passing March 27, 2021 in Durham, NC. She was the daughter of the late Almira Morris Mahon and the late Ralph H. Mahon. She was born in Glasgow, Montana January 27, 1962. She attended public schools in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School. She then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in special education from Hunter College, New York, New York. Deborah continued to further her education and earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Phoenix. She worked many years in New York City with the Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Transit Authority and Children Services. After relocating to Durham, she worked at Saint Joseph AME Church as an office administrator. Having been reared in a Christian home surrounded by love, culture, and courage, she joined St Thomas Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, NY where she was baptized and confirmed. Throughout her childhood and even during her adult years, Deborah was immersed in the Christian community that would be her lifelong support. Wherever she lived, she put her trust in the Lord and devoted her time and talents to serving Him by doing His good word and works. As a daughter, sister, mother, and cousin she was loving, faithful and spirit-filled. She radiated a room with her bright smile and laughter as she shared memorable times with family and friends. She is dearly missed by her loved ones who will celebrate her life knowing she is at peace with her creator. Left to cherish her precious memory is her son Matthew Curry (Durham, NC) whom she adored and was the center of her life. From the moment he was born, Matthew became the sunshine in her life. She knew that her sole purpose was to love and protect him. She also leaves behind her brother, Edward Mahon (Brooklyn, NY), special and supportive first cousins, Velez and Michael Childress (Durham, NC), Clinton and Kimberly Copeland, (Durham, NC), Vatara Copeland Slade (Elizabeth City, NC); nieces and nephews Ashlee Mahon (Brooklyn, NY), Shashone Childress (Denver, CO), Kiah Childress Peoples (Thojae), Las Vegas, NV, Keishmond Rogers (Kashonda), Raleigh, NC; Quincy Slade, (Elizabeth City, NC); Devon Scott (Durham, NC) and Members of the Curry family from NY, NY include: mother-in-law, Rebecca Franklin, sister-in-law Sharon Curry, aunt-in-law Mary Anyaehie, niece Adamma Anyaehie-Griffith and very special friends Tawan Fields (Durham, NC), (Herb Richardson (NY, NY) and many friends and relatives with whom she shared special holidays and celebrations. A memorial service of celebration has been scheduled for Thursday, April 1, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., at Scarborough & Hargett Celebration of Life Center, Inc., 309 N Queen Street, Durham, North Carolina 27701.
