Mrs. Delphine Bouknight Lemon

April 8, 1949 - May 1, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Mrs. Delphine Bouknight Lemon, age 70, announces her passing which occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Duke Hospital. Mrs. Delphine Bouknight Lemon was born April 8, 1949, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late Maxcy and Rosetta Laney Bouknight. She departed this life on May 1, 2019, after struggling with complications from the Influenza B virus. After migrating from South Carolina to accept a job at Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, Maxcy Bouknight, and his wife Rosetta, moved their family to Durham, North Carolina. Delphine and her siblings would then be raised by both of their parents in Hayti; the historic African American community in Durham, North Carolina. She attended Durham City Schools and was a graduate of the Hillside High School Class of 1967. Following graduation from high school, Delphine enrolled in, and successfully completed nursing school at the Watts School of Nursing. She was employed as a Licensed Practitioner Nurse (LPN) at Duke University Hospital, and the VA Medical Center, where she later retired. Delphine undoubtedly loved the Lord. She was a praying woman who often encouraged her family to gain their own personal relationship with the Lord! She joined First Calvary Baptist Church at a young age and remained an active member until she became ill. Among her many interests, Delphine especially enjoyed family gatherings (the last would be her surprise 70th birthday celebration, just three weeks prior), watching her favorite T.V. program - Law and Order, crossword puzzles, and reminiscing about the days of old with her family. She was the consummate disciplinarian, supporter , fan, advocate and "sounding board" to each of her nieces and nephews. She was also known to be strong willed and vocally direct; personifying the phrase, 'it is a said, what I said, kind of day", #noFilter! Delphine was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Lemon; her parents, Maxcy and Rosetta Laney Bouknight; sisters, Vivian Bouknight Reaves and Maxine Bouknight Alston; and brother, Deacon Marcus Bouknight. She is survived by goddaughters, Connie and Regina (Everette); godbrother, Greg Grayson (Hazel); godsister, Sarah Mangum; one aunt, Lillie Mae Nelson; one sister-in-law, Antoinne D. Bouknight; nieces, Sheritha Bumpass Dash, Mo'nika Bumpass Dixon (Terry), Alysha Bouknight Miller (Toni), Kimberly McAllister and Lovita Bouknight; nephews, Jerry Bumpass, Jr. (Lynikka) and Joseph "Shaun" Alston; great nieces, Shonta Nicholson, Attiana O'Neal, Jennifer Lopez, Jazmen Bumpass, Caniya McAllister, Toni Johnson, Tabitha Evans, Imani Dixon, Jada Bumpass and Simeria Tate; great nephews, Maxcy Nicholson, Jerry Bumpass, III, Joshua Nicholson, Jahlieel Bouknight, JaMel Generette, Caden Noel, J'Mauri Bumpass, Zachariah Rogers, Jerryon Bumpass, Jerias Bumpass Coaxum, Daniel Bumpass, TyShaun Lee, Michael Nicholson, Jr., Janavious Tate and Joseph Alston. Funeral services will take place at First Calvary Baptist Church, 1311 Morehead Avenue, Durham, North Carolina, 27707, at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. A family visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Delphine Bouknight Lemon will be laid to rest in Glenview Memorial Park.
