Mrs. Karren Zenobia Alston McQuaig

April 17, 1952 - September 7, 2015

On April 17, 1952, God in His gracious mercy blessed the late Mr. James Russell Alston, Sr. and The late Mrs. Helen Bridges Alston with a beautiful daughter in which they named Karren Zenobia Alston. With the same gracious mercy, God on Monday, September 7, 2015 whispered, “Peace be thine’ and she slept away into eternity. Preceding her in death are her parents; Two brothers; Mr. John Anthony Alston, Mr. James Russell Alston, Jr., and her niece, Mrs. Sylvie’ Lovell Bullock-Smith. Karren Zenobia McQuaig was raised in Durham County. She attended Pearsontown Elementary School, Merrick-Moore High School, and ultimately completed her education at Durham Technical Institute. She later returned to Durham Technical Institute and received a Certification as an Optical Technician and obtained employment at Burlington Industries. She was united in marriage at an early age to Mr. Charles Dennis McQuaig. To this union, two children were born, Charles Taper McQuaig and Sonya Denise McQuaig. Karren was a hard working individual. Her employment included; Burlington Industries, Shoney’s Inc., Washington Duke Hotel and the Durham Hilton as a waitress, and a Funeral Assistant with Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens for many years. Karren was a lifelong member of Orange Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She attended Service there each Sunday until her prohibitive disability. She was one of the “original members” of the Orange Grove Chancellor Choir which was orchestrated by their pastor at that time, the Reverend James E. Daniel. Left to cherish her memories are: her husband, Charles Dennis McQuaig; a son, Charles Taper McQuaig (Roylisa) of Knightdale, NC and Sonya Denise McQuaig of the home; one sister, the Reverend Dr. Saundra Bullock-Hunter (Robert) of Raleigh, NC and one brother, Mr. Virgil E. Alston, Sr. (Sylvia) of Amelia, Va., Three Aunts; Mrs. Annie W. Bridges and Mrs. Juanita W. Taylor of Durham, NC and Mrs. Lona Fluker Hunter of Manhattan, NY; Two Sister-in-laws; Mrs. Dorothy Conrad, Mrs. Patricia Allen of Durham, NC; Two Brother-in-laws; Mr. William McQuaig of Atlanta, Ga. And Mr. Ivory McQuaig of Durham, NC; Two Grand-children; Alyssa Nicole Little and Cameron Tamia McQuaig of Durham, NC; Twenty –three nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. The family acknowledges the closeness of her two neighbors Louis Michelle Jones and Lasheka Renita Suitt. Also, Sis. Janet Allen, Ella Bridges and Deacon Horace Bridges (her cousins) took excellent care of her while attending Service. For this we are grateful. Funeral service will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Orange Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 505 East End Ave, Durham, NC 27703 at 1:30 p.m. A visitation with family and friends will be held at 1 p.m.
