The passing of Mrs. Martha Slaughter, age 102, on Friday, September 6, 2019, at Carver Living Center, is being announced by her daughter, Mrs. Peggy Slaughter Hardy. Martha Slaughter, daughter of the late Mr. James Henry Shorter and the late Mrs. Mary Margaret Reeder Shorter, was born on February 17, 1917 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Martha grew up attending Grace United Methodist Church. She began school in her community and finished her education in Washington, D.C. Public Schools. She married Theodore Sylvester Slaughter on January 11, 1936, in Washington, D.C. From this union, their daughter Peggy Ann was born. She worked for the federal government, the District of Columbia Public Schools, for Howard University and she cared for various children in her family. She enjoyed reading and crocheting. Martha and her friends met regularly to play Bingo and the Pokeno card game. She was also active in John Stewart Methodist Episcopal Church and in Hughes Memorial United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Sylvester Slaughter; brothers, Stephen, Robert and Arthur Shorter; sisters, Lucille Snowden and Carrie Travers; and niece, Marva Travers. Martha leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Peggy A.S. Hardy (Floyd); two grandchildren, Rachel Hardy and Brian Hardy; sister, Clara Plummer; nephews, Raphael A. Plummer (Zelma), James K. Travers (Sandra), Stephen Travers (Nikki), William D. Travers and Timothy C. Travers; great nieces, Raquel Cherry (Anthony), Rochelle Prince (Thomas), Stephanie Travers and Shayne Travers; great-great nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends. Homegoing services will take place at Grace United Methodist Church, 11700 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, Maryland 20744 on Friday, September 13, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with a family visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Maryland National Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to your charity of choice in honor of Mrs. Martha Slaughter.
