Proverbs 31:31 (KJV) ~ Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Susie Earl Pulliam, 78, was born October 14, 1943, in Roxboro, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Susie Vernell Pulliam and the late John Earl Pulliam. She departed this life to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at UNC Rex Hospital with her loving children by her side. Susie started working at a very young age by helping at Ms. Mary’s local store. She began by bringing in firewood and soon thereafter she would work the register, stock shelves, clean and organize. She learned how to sew and cook as an adolescent, often times making her own clothes and some for her friends. Susie was very active in school as she was a cheerleader and played basketball. She also dedicated her time in church, helping out wherever there was a need. Her commitment to helping her family was evident as she learned to drive at age 12 in order to take her dad to work, run errands for her mom, and help take care of the house and her siblings. As a young adult, Susie worked in textile factories such as Collins & Aikman (C&A) and Burlington Industries. She would also, clean houses and buildings to make additional income to take care of her family. Raising 5 children, she never relied on government assistance or support from her once husband. She was determined to give her children the best that she could from living in good neighborhoods to keep them safe, supporting them in school programs and clubs, to raising them to know God by working and getting involved with church. Susie was a devoted mother with extraordinary work ethics. She was a dedicated housekeeper for the Dean Center at UNC Chapel Hill and later worked in the Virginia Beach School system for over 10 years before retiring. Susie was a giver and she loved to help out family and friends when they were in need. She led with confidence and strength and did not let her circumstances define her reality. Instead, she made the best of her circumstances and as a Believer, she trusted God to guide her path. She was truly a Woman of Faith, Courage and Grace. Susie loved her church family at Calvary Revival Church in Norfolk, VA. She cherished Bishop B. Courtney McBath and Pastor Janeen McBath as they affectionately called her mother. Her love for Christ was unmeasured for she witnessed of His love to all those around her and she praised Him in the most high. Susie was preceded in death by her father, John Earl Pulliam; mother, Susie Vernell Pulliam; brother, J.W. Pulliam and son, John Kevin Yarborough. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving children Sandra Green (Walter) of Chesapeake, VA; Alexander Yarborough (Beverly) of Knightdale, NC; Quentin Yarborough of Fort Worth, TX; and Tina Yarborough Liggins (Ronnie) of High Point, NC; her sister, Stella L. Woody; niece, Eunice Alfreda “Bam” Pulliam, nephew, Ray Pulliam (Charleta), ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives, extended family, and devoted friends.
