Mr. Troy Carlton Hardy

The passing of Mr. Troy Carlton Hardy on Sunday, April 7, 2019, is being announced by his family. Troy Carlton Hardy, son of the late Mrs. Lovie McWilliams Hardy and the late Mr. Plummer Fletcher Hardy, Sr., was born on May 9, 1935 in the Enfield township of Halifax County, North Carolina. Troy accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age. He was baptized and joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Enfield, North Carolina, where he was an active member. Troy enjoyed Christian music and his love and commitment to Christ inspired his to sing and play the piano and organ at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and White Oak Baptist Church, both in Enfield. Other congregations that were encouraged by Troy's music were St. Mark AME Church and Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church, both in Rocky Mount, North Carolina; Ruggles Street Baptist Church in Boston, Massachusetts; Portuguese Baptist Church in Taunton, Massachusetts; and West Durham Baptist Church and St. Joseph AME Church, both in Durham, North Carolina. On December 24, 1958, Troy was united in holy matrimony with the love of his life, Ruby Odell Bullock. They were blessed with two lovely children; a daughter, Angela Rene' and a son, Carlton Fitzgerald. Troy was a faithful and devoted husband and father. He believed each person should strive to make the world a better place in which to live and that "the family that prayed together stayed together." Troy received his early education in Halifax County public schools where he completed his high school education at Eastman High School in 1952. He continued his education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1956. Troy's quest for wisdom and knowledge led him to Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts where the Master of Arts degree in Mathematics was conferred upon him in 1971. Troy received an additional Master of Science degree in Industrial Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1980. Troy positively influenced the lives of many people. He served as a classroom teacher for thirty-one years in the public schools of Massachusetts and North Carolina. After retiring from Hillside High School in Durham, he continued to work in industry and as a faculty member at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh. Troy is survived by his loving and devoted wife Ruby Bullock Hardy, daughter, Angela Hardy Foster (Parran), Mooresville, North Carolina; a son Carlton Fitzgerald Hardy (Juliet), Stone Ridge, Virginia; a granddaughter Miryea Troy Houston, Creedmoor, North Carolina; a step-granddaughter, Moya Tiko Foster, Raleigh, North Carolina; four sisters - Shelda Hardy Lassiter (Foster), Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Lillie Hardy Rooks, Pleasant Garden, North Carolina; Elaine Hardy Holland (Anthony), Clinton, Maryland; Lovie Hardy Leach, Indian Head, Maryland; three brothers - Willie Arnell Hardy, Enfield, North Carolina; George Winton Hardy (Sandra), Greensboro, North Carolina; Michael Devon Hardy (Cynthia), Delray Beach, Florida; three sisters-in-law - Artelia Turner, Willema L. Hardy, and Eleanor Hardy; a brother-in-law, Roland A. Bullock (Sarah); honorary children: Thurman Dortch (Hellen), Kai Hardaway, and Monique White; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Troy is predeceased by two brothers - Plummer Fletcher Hardy, Jr. and Robert Roosevelt Hardy; and a brother-in-law, Edward Rooks. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt and special thank you to Sharon Haskins who assisted in the care and comfort provided to Troy during his illness over the past four years. Funeral services will take place on Friday, April 12, 2019, at St. Joseph A.M.E. Church, 2521 Fayetteville Street, Durham, North Carolina 27707. Family members will greet friends at 11:00 a.m. and the service will follow at 12:00 noon.
